Congratulation.

This package contains DATMAN-99, the Revolution in Tape Storage!!!

DATMAN-99 is a new kind of tape control software which allows you
to treat your tape drive like a disk drive under Windows 95/98 and
MS-DOS. By a drive letter assigned to the volume, your tape drive
becomes equivalent of the hard disk. With DATMAN, the tape drive is
no longer a specialized equipment which can be solely controlled by
a backup/restore software. Installing the DATMAN file system, the
tape drive becomes a general purpose volume of removable media.
Most programs which can read or write files (on hard or floppy disk)
can access the DATMAN tape volume directly even though the applicatoin
was not originally designed to use a tape drive. In short, DATMAN
greatly enhances the value of your tape drive as a low-cost, high-
capacity storage which is good for a wide range of applications.

If you obtained this package on a CD-ROM or from a web site other
than DATMAN's home page (http://www.datman.com), it may not be
the latest version. If so, you may visit the home page and check
if a newer version is available.

This package contains the following files

setup.txt ; this file
setup.exe ; run this program to install DATMAN files on your hard disk

the following files are accessed by the setup program

_instpgm.ini ; setup control file
_instpgm.exe ; setup program second stage
dmancore.mva ; datman core files (for minimum installation)
dmanreal.mva ; datman for DOS (real mode) (for typical installation)
dmandocs.mva ; datman document files (for full installation)
dmanutil.mva ; datman utilities (for typical installation)
dmanut32.mva ; datman extra 32-bit util (for typical installation)

Each .mva (Multi-Volume Archive) file is a compressed file for
a group of DATMAN component files. Selections of categories are
    done inside the SETUP program.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
All the files delivered by the DATMAN-98 release package come with
encoded file date/time stamp for easy recognition of its version.

While the file date reflects the release date as is, the file time
is the release version. For example files with version 2.04.0
shows time 1999-05-10 02:06:00. The regular DIR command does not
reveal the second value but DDIR.EXE will show that, too.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The real mode components (the new DATMANFE.EXE and DATMAN.EXE programs),
have been reworked. Now, they can handle the new DATMAN tape format
ver 2.00 which were redesigned for long filenames and othere expaneded
file attributes information. This and subsequent releases (ver 9.10.4
or higher) can restore files in real mode from the tape written in Win95.

The SETUP program will create the DATMAN home directories and
copy all necessary components into the directories. A typical
installation makes the C:\DATMAN directory with the following
files:

C:\DATMAN (this name may vary depending on your choice)
      |
      +- bin
      | |
      | +- datmancc.exe (Command Center - the main program)
      | +- datmanfe.vxd (virtual device driver)
      | +- ????????.exe executable files
      |
      +- document
           |

######################### I M P O R T A N T #############################

There are three 10-digit numbers related to DATMAN user registration.

 1. DATMAN Serial Number (assigned to a user license)
 2. DATMAN Install Key (like a password for installation)
 3. DATMAN System Code (proof of ownership for download)

When you obtain a DATMAN software package, whether it is a freeware
or a licensed copy, you will receive a Serial Number and Install Key.

The Serial Number and the Install Key are always issued at the same
time and an Install Key is always specific to the Serial Number.
But for a Serial Number (that is associated to user license) you may
receive two or more Install Keys.

If you obtain the DATMAN Freeware package from a third party (e.g.,
a Freeware/Shareware CD-ROM), it is likely that you do not have your
own Serial Number and/or Install Key.

The first time you run the DATMAN program after initial software
loading (SETUP.EXE) you will go through a user registration on your
system. If you do not have your own Serial Number and/or Install
Key for the DATMAN Freeware, you choose the option for installation
without license. In such a case, you can still use the DATMAN
software except that DATMAN will set a maximum storage capacity to
be 512 KB rather than the nominal 1 GB for the Freeware license.
At your earliest convenience, you should visit DATMAN's home page

     http://www.datman.com/update.htm

and obtain your own Serial Number and Install Key by registring
your name and fill out a user servey form. To register for the
DATMAN Freeware does not cost anything. It is free of charge.
There will be no expiration date once you install DATMAN software
on your computer.

The Install Key is good only for two months after it is issued. If
you let it expire by not installing the DATMAN-98 software to the
intended computer in time, you need to revisit the DATMAN web page
and request a new Install Key. If your licensed

nce the DATMAN-98 software is
installed, you will not use Install Key again and therefore, the
Install Key expiration period does not matter to you.

When you
need to install DATMAN-98 on another machine for a legitimate reason
(in accordance with the licensing agreement), you can obtain
additional Install Key from the DATMAN web page.

When you find a new DATMAN-98 version posted in the DATMAN web page,
you may proceed for download without waiting for an Email from Pixelab
for notification in advance. Your Serial Number along with the System
Code will provide the necessary proof of ownership. If it is within
the free update period (normally within 6 months of purchase), you
can download the new version and start installation immediately.
The system code specific to your computer platform is displayed by
DATMANCC when you click the menu, [ Help > Update and Upgrade ].
